The General Surgery team at HPA Gambelas recently performed a highly complex surgical intervention associated with a rare pathology, with an estimated incidence of approximately one case per million inhabitants.
The 85-year-old patient presented with an inability to eat for several days. Following clinical assessment and stabilization, a gastric volvulus was diagnosed, with migration of the stomach into the thoracic cavity, associated with diaphragmatic rupture.
The surgical approach allowed complete correction of the gastric torsion, repositioning of the stomach into the abdominal cavity, and repair of the diaphragm. The procedure was performed using a minimally invasive approach, employing laparoscopic technique.
This case highlights the responsiveness, technical expertise, and technological resources available within the HPA Saúde Group, as well as the high level of rigor of its General Surgery team, serving the population of the Algarve.
